memory-finds-nothing

The largest comb mean found in a kinematic lattice whose azimuth errors are an AR(1) process, against the coefficient of that process, over eight seeds at each point. The dashed line is where the rule's own stems sit, at 0.64; the shaded strip is three sampling bands. Every point is inside the strip — 0.028, 0.026, 0.022, 0.014, 0.015 at ρ = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 0.97 — and the readout returns nothing on 40 runs out of 40. A correlated error is not a periodic one.

Drawn at its defaults, in what a disturbance's own structure can forge. It takes no options at all, so every essay calling it gets this exact drawing.

What a plant might be doing

A disturbance with a memory

The previous phase's control assumed that a plant's errors are independent from organ to organ, and nobody had tested it. Give the errors a memory — each one a fraction of the last, up to a coefficient of 0.97 — and the comb does not appear. The obvious threat to the result turns out to be empty, and the algebra says why before the measurement does.

The claims, measured

The survey this site cannot do

Four phases of asking for a dataset, and it is still not here. What this phase can do instead is specify it — the fields, the sampling, the sizes, and which of this collection's claims each one would settle. Two of the four fields asked for turn out to be worth less than the asking implied, and one was never asked for at all.

The pattern itself

A periodicity is not a lattice

Give a lattice's errors a period of eight and a comb appears at spacing eight, on an arrangement with no rule in it. But the partner it names is 10, then 12, then 11, then nothing — an accident of the disturbance rather than a measurement of the pattern. The forgery is caught by reading a second stem, and by nothing else.

The claims, measured

The control a survey would need

A comb no longer shows that a plant computes its pattern, so the survey this site has been specifying for five phases has to change. What it loses is its headline; what it gains is a measurement a botanist can actually make — six requirements, four of them already in the specification, and a quantity nobody has ever reported.
